Many involved parents want to have as much information as possible before entertaining the idea of their son joining a fraternity.
We provided this section to help answer any questions or concerns regarding our organization.
The Delta Upsilon Chicago chapter takes pride in being an extraordinary fraternity. We have many outstanding members who participate in activities ranging from Arts to Athletics even though the number of brothers we have is relatively small (around 40). Brothers frequently produce shows, perform in the symphony, as well as compete in athletics. Our fraternity encompases a variety of interests. By that same token, we have many members of varying majors and talents.
There is no "typical" DU.
One major concern parents may have is in regard to drinking.
Delta Upsilon does not condone drinking.
The standards set by Delta Upsilon International provides strict no-tolerance policies towards chapter drinking. As a social community, we help each other avoid negative influences.
In regards to the pledge process,
DU is adamantly against hazing. Our pledge process is open for public scrutiny. Our induction and initiation ceremonies are also public.
A student receives a bid, an offer valid for one year, to engage in a quarter-long process to see if DU is right for them and if they are right for us. This allows them to "test-drive" being a DU, anyone can stop the process. We give weekly evaluations based on their character and amiability. At the end of the quarter and of the process, they are inducted as brothers.
Joining DU means actively participating with peers and strengthing relationships with friends. We do this by having
- Weekly meetings
- Social events, such as meeting with other fraternities and sororities
- Charity projects, such as donating clothing
- Brotherhood events, such as paintball and dinner
Active members rarely "fall out of touch" with one another.
Aside from emphasizing a social nature, we also emphasize academics and career development.
- We have an extensive alumni network, allowing us to network with those in our field of interest
- The average brother's GPA is higher than the University average, most brothers graduate with honors in their field of study
- Many brothers tutor each other, upperclassmen members often have experience with the coursework of younger brothers
- We also have many groups within DU that meet, such as the Delta Upsilon Equity Holdings Group, which allows brothers with interests in business to analyze and follow stocks and bonds
Yearly dues are approximately $900/year. However, we have yearly, semi-quarterly, and quarterly payment plans. We emphasize that no prospective member should be deterred by this cost. We remain committed to work with any financial hardships that make joining an obstacle.
Benefits from the dues are:
- Delta Upsilon supplementary accident insurance, with $0 deductable
- Subsidized brotherhood events and dinners
- A Delta Upsilon card, providing discounts and benefits with various businesses
- Elibility for Delta Upsilon Scholarships
- Delta Upsilon International conference trips
We remain committed to open communication with parents to answers questions about Delta Upsilon. Please visit our contact page if you have any further questions.
